Norman Mailer: Works and Days

National Institute of Arts and Letters

The senior U.S. honor society for the arts (founded 1898), which on 25 May 1960 awarded Mailer a grant. In 1976 it merged with its smaller inner body, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, to form what is now the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

On 25 May 1960 Mailer received a grant from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. The two project sources differ slightly in wording — JML’s Days calls it an “award,” Important Dates a “grant” — but agree on the body and the year.

Stub; later Mailer honors from the merged American Academy of Arts and Letters will be recorded here or on a successor page as they enter the register.
