Alan Lelchuk, the American novelist and an editor at Modern Occasions, drew Mailer’s public objection in October 1972 over his forthcoming first novel American Mischief (1973), in which a character based on Norman Mailer is shot dead. Mailer’s complaint, and his subsequent request for a correction, are recorded in 72.13 and 72.15.
