David Denby, the American critic, wrote “The Contender” (New Yorker, 20 April 1998, 98.3) — at once an interview, a review of The Time of Our Time, and, in Lennon’s estimate, “one of the finest appreciations of Mailer published in the 90s.” It was accompanied by Richard Avedon’s portrait of Mailer.
