Norman Mailer: Works and Days

James Atlas

American writer, biographer, and editor; his 1979 New York Times Magazine cover essay 'Life with Mailer' was the longest biographical profile of Mailer since Brock Brower's 1965 Life piece. Later the biographer of Delmore Schwartz and Saul Bellow.

James Atlas, the American writer and biographer, profiled Mailer in “Life with Mailer” (79.9), a New York Times Magazine cover essay of September 1979 — the longest biographical treatment of Mailer since Brock Brower’s 1965 Life piece (65.20) — concentrating, like Brower, on whether Mailer would make good on his early promise to write “the great American novel.” Atlas went on to write the lives of Delmore Schwartz and Saul Bellow.

Stub created during the 1979 ingest.
