Jesse Jackson, the civil-rights leader and two-time candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, drew Mailer’s public endorsement in the 1988 New York primary. Mailer’s New York Times op-ed “Jackson Is a Friend of Life’s Victims” (88.2) — written against Ed Koch’s remark that any Jew voting for Jackson was “crazy” — is, Lennon notes, his most considered discussion of Jewish-black relations, arguing that “we in America may not be able to solve any of our worst problems in organic fashion until a black man does become President.”
