American journalist, a co-founder of Punk magazine and later of the oral-history method; he interviewed Mailer for High Times in 1979.
Legs McNeil, the American journalist and a co-founder of Punk magazine, conducted the omnibus 1979 High Times interview with Mailer (79.7) — billed as the “punk contender” taking on “the champ of American letters” — in which Mailer discussed, among much else, the 1960 stabbing of his second wife, Adele.
The interview was reprinted in The Mailer Review 14 (2020). In his memoir Resident Punk (with Crispin Kott; BenBella, 2026), McNeil recalls his association with Mailer, including an April 1980 party at Mailer’s Brooklyn Heights home at which Woody Allen hid in the bathroom all night — an anecdote reported by Entertainment Weekly (see 2026).
