Marco Vassi, the American erotic writer who coined the term “Metasex” for all the varieties of sex “to the side, beneath, or beyond the act of procreation,” died of AIDS in 1989. Mailer wrote the preface to his posthumous A Driving Passion (1992, 92.11) — at once an introduction to Vassi’s work and a eulogy, calling him “a philosopher of the second variety,” a “pioneer” who “developed his philosophy from the journeys of his life,” and noting that “philosophers are the first of the species to die of a broken heart.”
