Nadine Gordimer, the South African novelist (later the 1991 Nobel laureate in Literature), was a prominent voice at the 48th International PEN Congress. Her 13 January statement to the panel “How Does the State Imagine?” was published alongside Mailer’s 12 January opening address, “The Writer’s Imagination and the Imagination of the State,” as “Two Views” in the New York Review of Books (86.20). She also figured in the women writers’ protest over the Congress’s panels (86.11).
