Pete Hamill, the American journalist and novelist, had been a friend of Mailer’s since they met in Chicago in 1962. His article-interview “Mailer on Buckley: ‘Tarnished Charm’” (New York Post, 2 November 1965) carried Mailer’s comments on William F. Buckley Jr. as a spoiler in the New York mayoral election.
