R. D. Laing, the Scottish psychiatrist whose The Divided Self (1960) made him a central figure of the anti-psychiatry movement, joined Mailer for a televised conversation on schizophrenia and related matters, hosted by Patrick Watson on New York’s Channel 13 in November 1972 (see 72.22). Laing’s view of madness as intelligible response answered to Mailer’s own long-held interest in psychopathy and the existential self.
