Italian film director and producer; he hired Mailer in the mid-1970s to write a screenplay from Harry Grey's novel The Hoods (the project that became Once Upon a Time in America), a job that ended in a payment dispute settled in court.
Sergio Leone, the Italian director, engaged Mailer to write a screenplay from Harry Grey’s novel The Hoods — the project that eventually became Once Upon a Time in America. Mailer spent a month in Rome producing some 180 pages; Leone disliked the work, and the matter ended in court, where Mailer was at last fully paid (see 76.8a).
