Norman Mailer's Letters on An American Dream, 1963–1969, ed. J. Michael Lennon (Sligo Press, 2004)

Dear Señor Gutierres-Olivos,

I want to thank you for your invitation to take part in the round table on October 10, but I fear I must say no because I expect to be away in New England at that time, working on a novel.

Note

Mailer’s letter to Gutierres-Olivos, the Chilean ambassador to the United States, is the first to acknowledge his plan to write An American Dream. He began the novel shortly after writing the letter.
