I went to visit Norman Mailer on President’s Day, in a blizzard. On the gloomy top floor of his Brooklyn Heights duplex, Mailer was wrapped in an anorak, looking out wistfully at the ice floes on the east river.
“What fun it would have been on a day like today to get a pair of cross-country skis and go out skiing!” he said.
