PROVINCETOWN, Mass. — Norman Mailer, nearing 84, says his knees are shot. He wobbles along on two canes and says, “If I walk 200 yards a day, I feel heroic.”

His hearing and eyesight are fading, but other than that, not much has changed for one of the last surviving literary lions to emerge from World War II. It’s down to him and Kurt Vonnegut, who’s 84.
