Norman Mailer: Works and Days

What I Think of Artistic Freedom

A short essay in Dissent, dated February 1955, addressed (Mailer's accompanying note says) to "those German Stalinists whose faith might be fluttering."

“What I Think of Artistic Freedom.” Dissent 2 (spring 1955), 98, 192–93.

An essay, dated February, that Mailer’s accompanying note says was written for “those German Stalinists whose faith might be fluttering.” He further suggested that “Bert Brecht might answer it in the West Berlin periodical Der Monat,” in which case Mailer’s essay would be reprinted in some East German publication; nothing came of the proposed exchange.
