An essay — the first of several Mailer would write for the New York Times — accompanied by a photograph of Mailer’s six-foot-high “Vertical City,” a model he and two friends assembled from Lego blocks over a three-week period in late 1964 or early 1965. Mailer’s attack on “Kleenex box” modern architecture and his counter-vision of a “Vertical City” recur across his mid-1960s work.
Rpt: in a revised form in Cannibals and Christians (66.11), the dust wrapper of which depicts “Vertical City”; the same color photograph is tipped in opposite the title page of the first edition, first issue only.
