“Book Ends,” an unsigned report in the New York Times Book Review (14 March 1976) on the National Arts Club banquet of 25 February at which Mailer received the club’s Medal of Honor for Literature (its Gold Medal). Mailer is quoted on the difficulty of writing in the period: “The nature of existence cannot be felt anymore. As novelists, we cannot locate our center of values.”
