The Presidential Papers (Berkley softcover, 1976)

Mailer’s new preface to the Berkley softcover reissue of The Presidential Papers (63.37; October 1976) — the first edition had none. It is followed by a piece mistitled “Special Preface to the First Berkley Edition,” which is in fact the “Special Preface to the Bantam Edition” (64.15). In the new preface Mailer judges the book over-mannered, written in a month “out of economic necessity,” yet “a paradigm of the prodigious anxiety which attached to politics in the early sixties.” A full transcription is held at full text.
