Speaking at a Joyce program at the Universalist Church in Provincetown, Mailer recalled “some of Harry Levin’s Joyce lectures” at Harvard and named James Joyce, Marcel Proust, and Thomas Mann the three great writers of his college years; he also read from his novel-in-progress, Ancient Evenings (83.18).
