Norman Mailer: Works and Days

Lipton's

Twenty entries from Mailer's private 1954–55 'Lipton's Journal,' published in Antaeus (autumn 1988) — the first appearance in print of material from the journal later issued in full as Lipton's, A Marijuana Journal (2024).

“Lipton’s,” published in Antaeus (no. 61, autumn 1988, 259–65), prints twenty entries from Mailer’s private journal of 1954–55, prefaced by his note that the journal “went on for close to one hundred thousand words” — written “on Mondays and Tuesdays after a heavy pot week-end,” marijuana going by “the not very opaque alias of Lipton’s.” Begun 1 December 1954 and running to 4 March 1955, it is the journal whose origins Mailer described in the Fourth Advertisement of Advertisements for Myself (59.13). This Antaeus selection is the first appearance in print of material from the journal, which was eventually published in full as Lipton’s, A Marijuana Journal: 1954–1955 (2024). (Rpt: the 17 December 1954 entry in Self, May 1990.)
