“Like a Lady,” Mailer’s interview with Madonna, was the cover story of Esquire in August 1994 (40–56) — billed “Mailer on Madonna” — a wide-ranging conversation on sex, AIDS, the media, and artistic growth. Long excerpts ran in a 12 July Liz Smith column (“Mailer-Madonna Gush Fest,” Newsday); reprinted in part in The Time of Our Time (98.7). It is the most prominent of the celebrity interviews Mailer conducted as a magazine writer in the early 1990s, alongside his Warren Beatty interview (91.45).
