“Why Mailer Decided to Play Jesus,” Bill Broadway’s interview, ran in the Washington Post on 10 May 1997 (B7). Mailer explains the “nose-against-the-glass feeling that those Christians have something I’m curious about” behind The Gospel According to the Son, and recalls speaking on the Old Testament at his father-in-law’s Freewill Baptist church in Arkansas. It is the condensed version of a longer interview published the following year in New Millennium Writings (98.1a).
