“And the Word Was with Norman,” Michael Glover’s account, ran in The Independent (London) on 24 September 1997 — a report on Mailer’s onstage conversation at the Curzon, Shaftesbury Avenue (the same London event covered in 97.23a). Asked why he did not probe the personality of Jesus as he had Marilyn Monroe, Mailer said, “I wanted to tell the story, I wanted to reach people. I wanted to point out the compatibility between Christ and Marx, to re-emphasize the notion of caring.”
