Christopher Busa‘s interview in Provincetown Arts (vol. 14, summer 1999, 138–48) — fourteen years after Mailer first appeared on the magazine’s cover — is, by Lennon’s account, the interview in which Mailer “speaks longer and in greater detail and nuance about what Provincetown has meant to him as an artist than in any other.” It also takes in The Gospel According to the Son (97.13) and Ancient Evenings (83.18), and finds Mailer, “on the high seas of his 70s,” calling his debut The Naked and the Dead “the work of an amateur.”
