Mailer’s one-page foreword to Enduring Justice: Photographs by Thomas Roma (Powerhouse Books, 2001) — black-and-white photographs taken at the Brooklyn Criminal Court Building, 1997–1999. Mailer plays on the title: to those in the dock, “justice is a state that is there to be endured … the hard small ball of concentrated dread in the pit of the stomach.” Reprinted in Talk magazine, August 2001.
