Richard Lee Fulgham’s account, posted on The Village Voice website, of a meeting with Mailer on 13 November 2004 at a Norman Mailer Society event in Provincetown. Fulgham — who calls the Society’s members “sycophants” and pushes his way into Mailer’s presence to ask him to read from his book The Hogs of Cold Harbor (“We’re two of the last literary lions in America”) — is told by Mailer that he too is a sycophant, but is treated gently: Mailer says that when he was young he would have acted the same way, and that “things will be better the next time around.”
