Norman spends the summer at the Schneider family hotels in Long Branch, New Jersey — the extended summer pattern the Mailers have kept since the 1928 move to Brooklyn.
The woman at center is Marjorie Schneider, an aunt on Fan’s side; her exact relation to the Schneider household is not yet established in Lennon’s Days RTF — see backlog.
The airmen pictured with twelve-year-old Norman — Clyde “Upside-Down” Pangborn, the first man to fly across the Pacific non-stop (1931), and Vincent Burnell, his navigator — foreshadow Mailer’s aeronautical fascinations, which carry him to Harvard in 1939 to study engineering.

Norman enters Boys’ High School in Brooklyn. He will graduate four years later, in June 1939, near the top of his 650-member class.
