1928
Both of Mailer's maternal grandparents die within six months — Ida Schneider in May, Rabbi Chaim Jehuda Schneider in November — and the family leaves the Long Branch household they had shared with them. In the fall the Mailers move to Cortelyou Road in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, continuing to summer in Long Branch. Norman enters P.S. 181, Flatbush, where he will complete grades one through four.

28 May — Ida “Chaje” Kamrass Schneider, Mailer’s maternal grandmother, dies.
November
22 November — Rabbi Chaim Jehuda Schneider, Mailer’s maternal grandfather, dies.
Fall
The Mailers — Barney, Fan, five-year-old Norman, and one-year-old Barbara — move from Long Branch to Cortelyou Road in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. The family continues to summer in Long Branch at the Schneider beach properties.
September
Norman enters P.S. 181 in Flatbush, where he completes grades one through four.
