Barry H. Leeds wrote The Structured Vision of Norman Mailer (New York University Press, 1969), the first book-length study of Mailer’s work, and remained a friend and recurring interviewer. His revealing “A Conversation with Norman Mailer” appeared in the Connecticut Review in spring 1988 (88.1) — in which Mailer gave his fullest account of why he abandoned the trilogy Ancient Evenings (83.18) was to have begun — and was collected in Conversations with Norman Mailer (88.6).
