Brock Brower, the American journalist and novelist, wrote “In This Corner, Norman Mailer: Never the Champion, Always the Challenger” (Life, 24 September 1965), the first major biographical article on Mailer. He reprinted it as “Norman” in his collection Other Loyalties (1968); Mailer wired his displeasure at the cuts, prompting Brower’s “The Updating.”
