Norman Mailer: Works and Days

Carol Stevens

Jazz singer; Mailer's companion from the late 1960s and mother of his fifth daughter, Maggie Alexandra (born 21 March 1971); dedicatee of The Prisoner of Sex (1971). The two married and divorced within a single week in November 1980.

Carol Stevens, a jazz singer, was Mailer’s companion from the late 1960s. Their daughter, Maggie Alexandra, was born on 21 March 1971, and Mailer dedicated The Prisoner of Sex (71.20) “To Carol Stevens” the same spring. In November 1980 — in the much-noted week in which Mailer divorced Beverly Bentley and married Barbara Norris (Norris Church) — he briefly married and then divorced Stevens, an arrangement undertaken to formalize Maggie’s status.

Mailer separated from Stevens in December 1975, beginning his life with Norris Church.
