Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary leader, was a figure of long fascination for Mailer, who addressed him directly in “An Open Letter to Fidel Castro” — written in 1961 and collected in The Presidential Papers (63.37) — saluting the Cuban Revolution as an existential act against the totalitarianism of the age. The two met in Havana in 1989.
