Frank Crowther
American writer and one of the organizers of Mailer's 1973 fiftieth-birthday party; interviewer for Changes magazine and a friend whom Mailer later eulogized.
Frank Crowther was a writer and one of the organizers of Mailer’s 5 February 1973 fiftieth-birthday party. He revisited the event and its “Fifth Estate” proposal in “Mailer’s 5th Estate: Who’s Paranoid Now?” (73.18, Village Voice) and conducted the two-part Changes interview “Chasing the Great White Whale” (73.43a, 74.3) in which Mailer discussed Heidegger, dread, and the occult. Crowther died by suicide in 1977; Mailer eulogized him in “Two Letters from Frank Crowther” (76.10, Paris Review).
