James Kutcher
World War II veteran who lost both legs in the 1943 Battle of San Pietro, Italy, and was subsequently dismissed from his clerk's post at the U.S. Veterans' Administration under the federal loyalty program for his Socialist Workers Party affiliations. His case became a touchstone of early McCarthy-era civil rights defense; Mailer served on Kutcher's national defense committee and contributed a statement (49.6) to the souvenir program for a 23 July 1949 Los Angeles benefit banquet.
