American playwright who met with Mailer in New York in July 1948 on his return from France to discuss adapting The Naked and the Dead into a stage play.

Upon Mailer’s return from France in July 1948, Hellman met with him — “interested in turning Naked into a play” — though no such adaptation reached the stage.
