Reed Whittemore was an American poet, biographer, critic, and literary journalist, and the editor of Carleton Miscellany. Mailer declined Whittemore’s invitation to a symposium in a brief 15 October 1963 letter (in the Letters collection), pleading “the perils of Pauline” of his An American Dream serial.
