Boston-founded American literary and cultural monthly (founded 1857; later The Atlantic). Mailer's first appearance is a set of five poems in the January 1962 issue (62.1), four of them later collected in Deaths for the Ladies.
The Atlantic Monthly — founded in Boston in 1857 by Francis Underwood with the backing of James Russell Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., and Ralph Waldo Emerson — was, by 1962, one of the established American literary monthlies. Mailer’s first appearance in its pages is the January 1962 poem cluster (62.1): five poems, one titled “Testaments,” the others untitled, opening “Men who are not married”; “I know the belly of Mexico”; “Promise? I won’t make a promise”; and “Poems written by masochists.” The cluster is reprinted in Deaths for the Ladies (and Other Disasters) (62.3) two months later.
