Mailer announces the five winners ($5 apiece) of his essay contest, announced in his September 1963 “Big Bite” column (63.10): “Why I am not now and never have been a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.” The contest title plays on the standard House Un-American Activities Committee loyalty-oath formula (“I am not now and have never been a member of the Communist Party”).
