“Some Notables Name Their Bests,” an unsigned New York Times questionnaire (6 January 1974) in which Mailer and fourteen others — Joyce Carol Oates, Joan Crawford, Billie Jean King, Wilt Chamberlain among them — name their favorite movies of 1973. Mailer’s choices ranged from “The Conformist” and “Last Tango in Paris” (see 73.12) to “Cries and Whispers,” “The Way We Were,” and “The Devil in Miss Jones.”
