Norman Mailer: 'The Time of Her Time'
Mailer's introduction to 'The Time of Her Time' as his own best story, in the anthology Writer's Choice; he relates Walter Minton's remark that publishing the story made him realize Lolita could be published in the U.S.
“Norman Mailer: ‘The Time of Her Time,’” Mailer’s contribution to Writer’s Choice: Each of Twenty American Authors Introduces His Own Best Story, edited by Rust Hills (David McKay, 1974). In a 271-word preface to the reprinted story, Mailer says his “credentials as a writer of short stories are, say the word, compact,” so choosing The Time of Her Time was not hard. He relates that Walter Minton of G. P. Putnam’s confided that publishing the story in Advertisements for Myself (59.13) made him realize Lolita could be published in the United States. Mailer shortened the preface when he reprinted it with the story in The Time of Our Time (98.7).
