“Novelist Shelved,” Mailer’s comic auto-obituary in Boston magazine (September 1979) — one of five mock obituaries by “five of Boston’s favorite people,” pendant to Joel Rosen’s article on obituary writers. Mailer calls himself “renowned in publishing circles for his blend of fictional journalism and factual fiction,” claims sixteen marriages, twenty-four children, and seven grandchildren, and, asked why he married so often, replies: “To get divorced. You don’t know anything about a woman until you meet her in court.”
