“The Executioner’s Song,” the first installment of the Playboy serialization (October 1979) of Mailer’s Gary Gilmore narrative, illustrated by Marshall Arisman. It corresponds, with many changes, to the first eight-and-a-half chapters of The Executioner’s Song (79.14). The three installments together won Playboy’s 1979 best-major-work award.
