“The Executioner’s Song,” the third and final installment of the Playboy serialization (December 1979) of Mailer’s Gary Gilmore narrative, illustrated by Marshall Arisman. It corresponds, with many changes, to a much-compressed version of Gilmore’s execution (chapters 30-40) of The Executioner’s Song (79.14). The three installments together won Playboy’s 1979 best-major-work award.
