Hilary Mills's major Saturday Review interview on Mailer's development as a writer, much of it devoted to his shifts between the novel and journalism and his claim to have started the New Journalism.
“Creators on Creating: Norman Mailer,” a major interview by Hilary Mills in the Saturday Review (January 1981), focused on Mailer’s development as a writer. Mills would go on to publish Mailer: A Biography (82.23) the following year. A good deal of the interview is devoted to Mailer’s movement between the novel and journalism, including his claim on the New Journalism: “if I started any aspect of that New Journalism — and I did — it was an enormously personalized journalism where the character of the narrator was one of the elements not only in telling the story but in the way the reader would assess the experience.”
