Children of the Pied Piper
Mailer's Vanity Fair review of Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho (March 1991) — the piece that announced his new post as the magazine's writer-at-large.
“Children of the Pied Piper,” Mailer’s review of Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho, appeared in Vanity Fair in March 1991 (154–59, 220–21). The review’s lead-in announced that Mailer had accepted the post of writer-at-large at Vanity Fair, the perch from which he would publish much of his early-1990s journalism (see “How the Wimp Won the War,” 91.2, and the 1992 Warren Beatty and Madonna pieces). It was reprinted (partial) in The Time of Our Time (98.7) and complete in Mind of an Outlaw (13.1).
