By Heaven Inspired: Republican Convention Revisited
Mailer's nonfiction-narrative account of the August 1992 Republican National Convention in Houston, for The New Republic — his only prose contribution to the magazine apart from a 1974 poem. His companion report on the Democratic Convention was never published.
“By Heaven Inspired: Republican Convention Revisited,” Mailer’s nonfiction-narrative account of the August 1992 Republican National Convention in Houston, ran in The New Republic on 12 October 1992 (12, 24, 26–27, 30–35) — a return, after two decades, to the convention reporting of Miami and the Siege of Chicago and St. George and the Godfather. Apart from his poem “Gladiators: For Hemingway” (74.16), it is his only contribution to The New Republic; his companion report on the 1992 Democratic Convention was never published. Reprinted in The Time of Our Time (98.7, partial) and complete in Mind of an Outlaw (13.1).
