Mailer’s new introduction (xi–xiii) to the 50th-anniversary edition of The Naked and the Dead, issued by Henry Holt on 6 May 1998, simultaneously in hardcover and softcover. It joined the year’s other observances of the anniversary — The Time of Our Time (98.7) and the surrounding press — and follows his earlier 1979 preface for the Franklin Library reissue (79.36).
