Mailer's gathering of his verse and line drawings (Random House, 2003) — most of the poems (some revised) from Deaths for the Ladies (1962) and Cannibals and Christians (1966), a new 'Hemingway Revisited' suite, and about 100 captioned drawings.
Modest Gifts: Poems and Drawings, published by Random House in spring 2003 (275 pp., $14.95, softcover; dedication “To Norris”). It reprints most of Mailer’s poems — some revised — from Deaths for the Ladies (and Other Disasters) (62.3) and Cannibals and Christians (66.11), adds a new suite, “Hemingway Revisited” (also in the Paris Review, 03.28), and interleaves about 100 of his captioned line drawings, along with his introduction to the 1971 Deaths for the Ladies paperback (71.31). Mailer: “These pieces, for the most part, will be comprehensible on first approach. Some barely qualify as poems. They are snippets of prose called short hairs, there to shift your mood a hair’s width.”
