Random House

Major New York trade publisher, founded 1927 by Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer; it issued Jack Henry Abbott's In the Belly of the Beast (1981) and, from Ancient Evenings (1983) onward, became Mailer's own publisher for the rest of his career.

Random House, the New York trade house founded in 1927 by Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer, entered Mailer’s story in 1981 as the publisher of Jack Henry Abbott‘s In the Belly of the Beast, for which Mailer wrote the introduction (81.10) and Erroll McDonald was the in-house editor. Two years later Mailer moved to Random House as his own publisher — beginning with Ancient Evenings (1983) and continuing, under his editor Jason Epstein, through all his remaining books.
