A previously unpublished question-and-answer exchange with Mailer, recovered and introduced by John Whalen-Bridge and first printed in The Mailer Review‘s 2008 memorial issue. Whalen-Bridge, then a graduate student, attended Mailer’s 1984 lecture at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island — an occasion paired with a screening of the documentary Norman Mailer: The Sanction to Write — and frames the transcribed exchange with a memoir of his early reading of Mailer. The piece is one of several recovered Mailer utterances the Review brought into print after his death; unlike Mailer’s archival writings in the same volume (the National Book Foundation acceptance speech, “The Bodily Function Blues,” “What’s Wrong with America”), it preserves Mailer’s spoken voice in dialogue with an audience.
